A City Garden to Let

The design gives space to and compliments a new conservatory, and visually links the patio to the upper garden, over 1m higher, enticing its use. The size of the garden is a great asset to the flat and its potential was waiting to be realised.

The key to the design is in the retaining wall, using rendered block work and imitation sandstone for cost and colour. Stepped up in two levels, the appearance is softened and by making it a seat, becomes a great use of space.

One end of the seat level is returned towards the extension, it supports the newly exposed old boundary wall and is a planting bed, visually joining the ground level bed to the top level garden. The other end is curved and holds the circular steps leading to the upper garden, here the top wall slopes to meet the seat and again, visually connects the spaces.

The design of the upper garden is simple with the steps leading to a space for seating on the sunny side with dense low maintenance planting opposite. Linking these sides is a central circular brick area.

It was heavily shaded by a number of mature trees and shrubs, some providing privacy. To achieve a balance, the crown of a mature Rhododendron was lifted and thinned, giving depth back to the garden. The use of evergreen glossy leaves, some variegated, and white berries bring light to the planting. A Prunus gives seasonal colour and architectural plants compliment the existing Chusan Palm - a perfect focal point once the crown was lifted and trunk cleaned, making it light and structural.
